A Mersey Killing: When Liverpool Rocked, And The Music Died (Mersey Murder Mysteries Book 1) Customer Reviews

:
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Swearing : Didn't get too far, pg 18, before characters started using the Lords name in vain. I hate when what might turn out to be a good book, does that....I didn't read any more of it. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2019 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from David Cochran -- So many things wrong : How can an author write so many books and not have a grasp on the use of an apostrophe? Possessives ar missing them and plurals have them. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2020 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Frank Watson - Writer -- Brtitish Police Procedural and Look Back to Early Days of Rock and Roll : A MERSEY KILLING by Brian L. Porter fulfills one of the purposes of a novel – transporting the reader to a different time and place – in two ways. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2019 )
  • from James J. Cudney IV (Jay) -- VINE VOICE : Solid Crime Series with Likable Protagonists and Great Story ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Mick Roberts -- Anytime, any place..... : If you set your story in a particular place, at a particular time, the key to successfully telling that tale is thorough, in-depth research. Despite him setting this book in Liverpool, It is clear that Mr Porter (or whatever his real name may be) has spent little time, if any at all, on visiting Merseyside - had he done so, he might have been able to add some local colour to this story. I get the impression that he looked at a map of Liverpool and just picked out some locales - for instance, he has no idea of the layout, appearance, or the character of Liverpool's dockland. One example of how he wings it is when he refers to dried up areas of the River Mersey - the Mersey is a mighty, fast-flowing river with a massive tidal range which leaves no part of the river bank in Liverpool "dried up". And the fact that he has never visited New Brighton is betrayed by him referring to there being wooded holiday camps in and around that town.......New Brighton is an urban, built-up area! And so to the lack of research regarding the historical setting. Other reviewers have highlighted silly errors re the Provisional IRA and colour TV for instance, but for me, his failure to research the era meant that he was unable to properly place the tale.....it just does not ever give the reader a feeling of being in the swinging 60s, despite Mr Porter's efforts to establish atmosphere by repeating pulling the stunt of referring to pop music of that decade. He could have given a sense of time and place by using local street names, and by establishing where in the city places such as the police HQ were, and where in town the protagonists lived, worked, and socialised. As it is, the lack of research means that the story could have been set anywhere, at any time........just change a few place names and a a few song titles and you would be transported in space and time. My house overlooks the River Mersey and I'm generally very pleased to find novels set in Merseyside: in this case however, my excited anticipation was not justified as this book was a let down. A thin narrative, poorly told....it bored me. I won't be reading the rest of this series. (I gave it one star only because the Amazon system would not let me give a no-star review) ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 4, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Flashback: Outstanding -The flashbacks: Seductive - loved it : Flashback: Outstanding -The flashbacks: Seductive ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 14, 2019 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Athanasius -- Disappointing : Some reviewers have said the writing in this book is "amateurish". The word I would use is "lazy". There is much repetition -- use of the same word twice in one sentence, for instance -- and far too much explanation to the reader in the "as you know, Sergeant" format, as Inspector Ross tells his sergeant things she must already know, but which Porter judges that YOU need to know. And often, you don't, such as why the Cold Case Squad don't take on the case. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 5, 2019 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Jackie R. -- brought back lots of memories : Good plot and some interesting characters but far too many errors - Marie being called Clemmy at one point. There were several cases of words being repeated and so many times at least half a page was used to describe someone walking into a room or answering a phone call. It just seemed to be "padded out " to make the book longer. More proofreading needed. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 4, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Fair Play -- Fab! Gear! Sound! : To use the vernacular of 1960's Liverpool, this book by author Brian L. Porter was fab, gear and sound! I believe these days Scousers would also call it boss! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 6, 2017 )
